Frequently Asked Questions
Below you will find the answers to questions we get asked the most
Chiropractic is a system of adjusting the bones of the spine to restore optimal function in your spine and nervous system. Chiropractic recognizes that we are self healing and self regulating organisms. Every system and function in your body is controlled by your nervous system. Interference in your nervous system (subluxation) causes imbalances in your body and lowers your health potential. Chiropractors detect and correct these imbalances so your body can heal itself naturally.
Subluxations occur when one or more of the bones in your spine shifts out of position and gets stuck. This leads to swelling and inflammation in the joint and tension in the supporting musculature. It also places pressure on the nerves and nervous system. Long term subluxations will lead to degeneration in the joints.
There are 3 causes of subluxation; mechanical, chemical and emotional stress to our bodies. Mechanical stress to your body can come from trauma such as a slip, fall, or accident. Mechanical stress can also come from postural stress. The way we sit, stand, move, sleep, bend and lift are examples of postural stresses. Chemical stress comes from our environment, the foods we eat and drink, and medicines we may take. Emotional stress comes from work, school, family, society, etc.
Adjustments are specific forces applied to restore normal mobility to a joint that is subluxated. A chiropractor will use their hands, an instrument, or a special table to perform an adjustment.
Yes. Several studies have shown chiropractic adjustments to be safe and effective. One study showed chiropractic to be safer and more effective then medical care for lower back problems. Chiropractic care helps people avoid drugs and risky surgery.
Yes. For many people the first trauma to their spine happens during the birth process. Elderly patients can have slips and falls as well as the accumulated stress of a lifetime to the joints of their spine. Chiropractic care helps people who have car accidents, work injuries, sports injuries, overuse injuries, etc.
The length of your chiropractic care needed depends on several factors. These include; how long you have had the condition, what caused the problem, having underlying health issues, and how you follow through with the recommended care. Many people choose to continue chiropractic care after their initial problem has resolved. This helps them to prevent future problems and maintain optimum function in their bodies. It is your body and you will need to be an active participant in its care. The level of care you receive is your choice. Your care, whether it is acute, rehabilitative, or wellness should drive you to your goal to reach your highest potential.
Most insurances cover chiropractic care including Medicare, no-fault, workers compensation, and most major medical insurance carriers. Policies vary with regard to deductibles, co-payments, or coinsurance. Contact our office to find out what your benefits are.
The joint surfaces are lubricated by fluids and some gasses, when the joint shifts it can make a noise. Your chiropractor relies on palpating the joint to feel for normal movement rather than whether it cracks or not. Some chiropractic techniques do not produce any sound from the joint.
Adjustments are controlled forces to specific joints. Chiropractors go through years of training including anatomy and physiology to learn how, when and where to adjust someone. Chiropractors do not adjust themselves, so neither should you.
No. Chiropractic relies on your body’s innate intelligence to help your body heal itself, naturally. Chiropractors may suggest palliative care such as ice or heat in some cases. We will coordinate care with your medical doctor if medication is needed. In many cases such as car accidents, your chiropractor may be part of a team of doctors working together to help your body heal.
